Area Agency on Aging Awards Grant for Local Farmers to Feed Senior Citizens through CARES Act Nutrition Funding

The Upper Coastal Palin Area Agency on Aging awards $202,000 to the Nash County Farmers Market to increase access to fresh produce for the region’s senior citizen population (age 60 and over) by distributing locally grown foods, including vegetables, meats, and other fresh goods. This nutrition award is funded by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The distribution will last through September 30, 2021.

The Nash County Farmers Market will utilize farmers and producers located in Halifax, Edgecombe, Nash, Northampton, and Wilson Counties for 100% of the Produce Boxes' contents to the greatest extent possible while maintaining a variety of healthy options. Each box will contain seasonal items in portion for at least two USDA recommended servings for one person. Items will include a green vegetable, leafy green vegetable, yellow/orange/red/purple vegetable, one vegetable compatible with longer storage, one fruit, one source of grain, and one source of protein.

The distribution of food boxes begins April 21, 2021, to select locations in each of the five-county region. Distribution for Edgecombe Northampton, Halifax, will occur each Wednesday, and Distribution for Nash and Wilson will occur on Thursday of each week while the program lasts.
