A Success Story in UCPCOG Region Print E-mail

An example of redevelopment of a Brownfields property in the UCPCOG region is the reuse of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Rocky Mount for the Children Museum, Arts Center and Playhouse Theater, all devastated by Hurricane Floyd in 1999.  The city pulled together $31 million to complete the redevelopment of the former Imperial Tobacco property -- half from the city's general fund and half from tax credits, FEMA reimbursements and flood insurance.  As a public investment the City used a variety of creative financing and resources to realize this project, and although expensive, it is a show case for Brownfields redevelopment and resulting community benefit.
